Simplify Fractions calculator

Simplify fractions online

How do you simplify fractions. In simplifying fractions, the numerator and denominator of the fraction are divided by the same number

Simplifying fractions becomes super easy with this online fraction calculator.
This is how the calculator works:

  1. Create a fraction by typing a number in the 2 Entry fields.
  2. Click on "Simplify".
If it is still possible to extract whole numbers from a simplified fraction, the calculator gives 2 results:
  • An outcome without whole numbers
  • An outcome with whole numbers

Explaining Simplifying Fractions

Divide numerator and denominator by the same number

In simplifying fractions, the numerator and denominator of the fraction are divided by the same number. Hereby:

  • The numerator and denominator of the fraction become smaller (simpler).
  • The value of the fraction remains the same (divide by the same number).
Example 1: Simplifying the fraction 12/16

The numerator and denominator can both be divided by 4
  • 12 : 4 = 3
  • 16 : 4 = 4
Therefore 12/16 = 3/4

Example 2: Simplifying the fraction 18/27

The numerator and denominator can both be divided by 9
  • 18 : 9 = 2
  • 27 : 9 = 3
Therefore 18/27 = 2/3

Greatest Common Divisor

The calculator simplifies a fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the Greatest Common Divisor (GGD) of these numbers. The GGD of 2 (or more) numbers is the largest number that is a divisor of both (all) numbers.

In this way, the fractions are simplified to the maximum, so they cannot be simplified further.
