Explanation of fractions and percents
How do you convert fraction to percent. How do you convert percent to fraction.
Fractions and percents both indicate parts of a whole.
Each fraction has a percentage and each percentage has a fraction.
It is important to know that:
1/100 share = 1 %
Other examples:
-
1/4 share = 25 %
-
1/2 share = 50 %
-
3/4 share = 75 %
-
1 wholel = 100 %
You can calculate a percentage of something by multiplying it by its corresponding fraction. So:
50% of 40 = 40 × 1/2 = 20
also possible:
50 % van 40 = 40 × 50 × 1/100 ( = 20)
From fraction to percent
The general rule for converting a fraction to its percentage is:
fraction × 100 = percent
So:
-
1/5 share = 1/5 × 100 % = 100/5 % = 20 %
-
1/3 share = 1/3 × 100 % = 100/3 % = 33 1/3 %
-
1/2 share = 1/2 × 100 % = 100/2 % = 50 %
-
3/4 share = 3/4 × 100 % = 300/4 % = 75 %
At 1/3 you see that the percentage itself can also be a fraction.
When converting a fraction to percent, you can also use the decimal number of the fraction:
-
1/5 share = 0,2 × 100 % = 20 %
-
1/3 sharel = 0,3333333 × 100 % = 33,33333 %
-
1/2 share = 0,5 × 100 % = 50 %
-
3/4 share = 0,75 × 100 % = 75 %
When multiplying by 100, the decimal point moves 2 places to the right.
At 1/3 you see that the calculated percentage is now a decimal number.
From percent to fraction
It is easy to convert a percentage to a fraction.
The general rule is:
percent × 1/100 = fraction
So:
-
1 % = 1/100 share
-
50 % = 50 × 1/100 = 50/100 = 1/2 share
-
95 % = 95 × 1/100 = 95/100 share
The percentage can also be a fraction:
3 1/2 % = 3 1/2 × 1/100 = 5/2 × 1/100 = 5/200 = 1/40 share
Or a decimal number
3,5 % = 3 1/2 % = 1/40 share
