Explanation of fractions and decimals

How do you convert fraction to decimal. How do you convert decimal to fraction.

A decimal number, like a fraction, indicates the part of a whole.
Fractions and decimals can be converted to each other.

From fraction to decimal

Fractions with a power of 10 as denominator, so: 10, 100, 1000, ...
you can easily write directly as a decimal number:
  • 9/10 = 0,9
  • 82/100 = 0,82
  • 462/1000 = 0,462
If the fraction does not have a power of 10 in the denominator,
can you try to write the fraction?

Example 1: Fraction 1/4
  • 1/4 = 25/100 (numerator and denominator times 25)
  • 25/100 = 0,25
So: 1/4 = 0,25

Example 2: Fraction 1/8
  • 1/8 = 125/1000 (numerator and denominator times 125)
  • 125/1000 = 0,125
So: 1/8 = 0,125

Not all fractions can be written as a fraction with a power of 10 in the denominator.
The fraction 1/3 is an example of this. In such a case it is always possible to calculate the decimal number using long division.

From fraction to decimal with long division

With long division you can find the decimal number of any fraction.

Example 1: The Fraction 3/8

The long division for this fraction:
8/3000\0,375
0
30
24
60
56
40
40
0

The long division stops here because the remainder becomes 0.

If the remainder is 0 then the decimal number is exactly equal to the fraction.
Dus: 3/8 = 0,375

Example 2: Fraction 1/3

The long division for this fraction:
3/100000\0,33333
0
10
9
10
9
10
9
10
9
10
9
1

It does not matter how long you continue with long division,
The remainder always remains 1 and the next number after the decimal point is always 3.

The decimal number 0.33333 is therefore only an approximation of the fraction 1/3.
The decimal number 0.3333333333 is a more accurate approximation, with 10 decimal places. The numbers after the decimal point are also called decimals.

From decimal to fraction

It is easy to find the fraction that corresponds to a decimal number.

For example, look at the decimal number 0.078.
The following applies to the corresponding fraction:
  • The numerator is the number after the decimal point, starting from the first non-zero digit.
So the counter here is: 78
  • The denominator depends on the number of digits after the decimal point.
    With 1 number: 10
    With 2 numbers: 100
    With 3 numbers: 1000
    etc ...
So the denominator here is: 1000
So: 0,078 = 78/1000
